JAZZ DUB

Gaudi "Jazz Gone Dub"
A brilliant concept album in 'Jazz Gone Dub." We have thought of it and now it is here. 'Cool Jazztice' has really done justice to jazz inna reggae dub style. Gaudi is a piano player so he will stand out, which he should. Happy Elephants Love Pistachio aka 'H.E.L.P.' is more jazzy. It starts with a flute solo, then goes into a guitar solo and ends with a trumpet solo that is joined by sax and the guitar & flute return all with a heavy skank to give it a strong reggae feel while along being very jazzy. Steooas style drums kick in which convert to an almost dancehall drum pattern. Get this, a new trumpet solo takes it to another level of jazz. Wait it does not end there. It comes it just after the 3:30 mark and lasts through the ret of the song which ends at about 5:37 to be joined by the guitar. If you can't tell this is one of our favorites. 'Deflated and Discombobulated' is one of the stronger reggae based tracks with Guadi taking center stage, kette percussion, nice guitar solo with Gaudi returning to show off his skills on keys and piano in perfect jazz form. We must say the caliber of musicianship is excellent with the variety of melodies and solos. It continues on 'Alabaster Moon.' The steppas style drums and Guadi return here. 'Fragile Hands' has a nice groove and a great balance of reggae and jazz combined through the instrumentation of a reggae back drop, Guadi on piano and that sexy jazzy sax making an appearance twice. Gaudi holds steady throughout the song.'Bach @ Liszt (Bucket List)' has a nice combo of horns harmonizing with keyboards. The first real taste of dub comes when they dub out one of the horns very briefly. The flute returns briefly. Never boring always ever changing instruments throughout every song and the album. What a great concept to add to this album. 'Dub Lu' is another gem of mixed up musical attitudes, This album may change your perception of jazz and reggae and make you more 'Susceptible' to both or the combination of the two. It has changed us. We are going to do an album of the same concept. This is one of the more reggae tracks. Lastly, we venture into 'Tokyo Subterfuge' you definitely hear the Far East influence. I do not know the percussion sounding instrument that gives it that Far East Sound, I think it's a mandolin sound played on the keys. It's the one major difference on this song than the rest. Otherwise, it carries all the same characteristics of the other songs. Brilliant album. We love the use of all the instruments throughout the album , this is what makes it and keeps interesting the whole time. The project took 4 years to complete. He recruited the best: David Hines of Steel Pulse, Jah Wooble, Ernest Ranglin, and the dynamic duo Sly & Robbie, just to name a few. Lastly, please note, this is NOT a dub album it's a fusion album well balanced of reggae and jazz.

CHRISTMAS REGGAE

Conkarah "Light Up The Trees'
Conkarah does it again. He returns with a great reggae Xmas reggae album. It starts with the name of the "Light Up The Trees." A beautiful and perfect double innuendo because reggae is synonymous with smoking the herb aka 'trees.' Then of course we light up the trees at this time of year so it's brilliant. First big up goes out for this great name. The other part that is great is the songs are not only holiday songs, they also feel like they can play year 'round even though it mentions the biggest holiday of the year. The exception is his great version (and the only sing over/cover song on the album) is Mariah Carey's 'All I Want For Christmas Is You.' This leads us to the fact that its six of seven original songs. Christmas songs at that, which is not very common. So big up two more times. Now it's time to go full bore into the album. It starts with 'Snow or No Snow.' In Conkarah style, the song sings about the cold 'up north' and down in the islands its strictly good vibes while they are jamming with 'Snow Or No Snow.' The title track really sets the vibe. 'We all need a lift, pass me the light so we can light it up, make we light up the trees 96 degrees make we feel irie and spread a little love.' Does it get any better than this? It is an Island Christmas. Here comes the one called called Conkarah in case you don't know. Just you and me no screen time it's a 'Silent Mode Night' with family and friends. No cell phones in other words. The song doesn't talk about Christmas, yet the song title gives you that impression. Another smart move executed by Conkarah. Big ups. Also a big shout out to Loud City on the production side of things, Bobby Hustle can tell you. 'Under The Tree' tells about the days of being alone at Christmas (many of us can relate). Then it happened you met that special someone. Now you do not need those meaning less gifts because once you have love, you have it all. A song for those that have each other. 'I got you and you got me, we don't need any presents under the tree, you're all that I want, you're all that I need, in my arms is where I want you to be, you make my heart go rampam pam (this is the part you actually need to hear).' 'Gold or Fame' is a love song like most here, the love is the gift here. The album ends on a second version true island vibe with a ukulele version of Mariah Carey's 'all I Want For Christmas Is You.' This is the album that can play year 'round with a holiday vibe.
