Mike Love "Leaders"
'Where's all the leaders, come out of hiding,
where's all the teachers, we need you now.'
The new Mike Love album opens with these lyrics & is called "Leaders.' It is the title track. Love uses these short chants & skints effectively throughout the album. The sequence of these songs are much more effective & impactful if played in their original order. As a DJ, we will be playing them in that way ourselves. The song that follows was purposely put next because Mike loves his kids and you hear the impact they have on him on this album & especially this first song. It's called 'Children of the Heart.' It is not only, the strongest song of the album, it is the most impactful song he has made in his career. It has all the great elements a song could have: passion, love, musicianship, quality arrangements, variety, interesting instrumentation, sweet harmonies, effective sound effects and one you will really feel. It is all for the 'Children,' which makes it the best part. This the first recorded song we have heard that captures the same feeling you get from Mike at one of his shows. Please note, this only the beginning. If 'Children' could possibly be missing anything, it was included in 'Remember.' We are a lover of horns and Mike has this original vocal style like a rap that he does in 'Remember.' If you know Mike you know what we are talking about. There are a few good qualities you get from Mr Love: talented to the extent of gifted, compassionate, loving and 'Humble.'We his interludes of 'Leaders' we are reminded again here, appropriately after the beautiful 'Blue Skies that come in like a psalm. leaders lead us through to......... 'Temptation.' Strong lyrics to really sit and think about, as our faith carries through, The Love reminds us 'It's Gonna Be Alright.'The message is sent out hard when you think of the 'Children' and all the mothers, who are our healers. At the end of the day, 'We Are One,' with the strong lead vocals of Hawaiian great Paula Fugo. This one gets meditative when breaks down into a heavy one drop riddim. WICKED!!!!! 'Dark Days' closes the album is a reminder to us all. Musically & sonically it's more reminiscent of how he is live without his band. There may only be 8 full songs & 3 interludes, the album has songs up to 10 mins and average nearly 5. This is one for the books....one for the collection
Here's a Special note from Mike Love himself:
Boundless gratitude to my wife Kendra, my kids Charlie, Milla, Leif and Advaya, my Mom and Dad and my sister and all my incredible friends who’ve helped support me and nurture these gifts I’ve been given to be able to bring this massive project to fruition. There are just too many names to mention, but you know who you are and know that you are a part of this music. It couldn’t have happened without you. This album is the first in a trio of albums, all recorded at once with one intention and energy behind them, meant to be experienced as one project. It’s been an undertaking like none I’ve ever experienced and likely never will again. I learned an incredible amount about myself through this process, what I’m truly capable of and more importantly, what I have to be okay with not being capable of. It took over four years to complete, but really, the journey started long before that, long before this life. I hope it brings you some light, laughter, tears, anger, empowerment, vulnerability and everything in between. From the depths of my heart and with all my Love …
Zion Marley 'Best Of Me'
Another grandson drops another catchy reggae tune based off of another Bob Marley tune. Iit's another son of Lauryn Hill & Rohan Marley, Zion Marley who uses 'So Much Trouble,' as his backdrop for the song. Love the line'is it wrong to love thy enemy, I've only been back stabbed by friends, can't let them get the Best Of Me.'
