Here is what we found this week.......Enjoy!
Instead of not doing a blog this week we decided to list a bunch of good songs that released. I did not find anything great just good. Maybe this should be the start of an additional playlist? What do you think?
REGGAE
Roots Makers "Summer Lovers"
This has to be the biggest surprise for the end of the year, even though it was discovered four months after its release. It is the Roots Maker EP of 4 songs called "Summer Lovers." Amazing sound, it's the epitome of the late 1970's & early 1980's golden era reggae. The first song 'Make Them Feel It,' reminds us of the classic Cocoa Tea album "Settle Down.' It has that sound of a young Cocoa Tea.'It is better to reveal it rather than conceal it, if you really want to deal with love you got to let them feel it.'BOOOM!!!! Love will always find a way. 'There She Goes' sounds like it's Derrick Lara and the Tamalins with those harmonies. You can 'Talk To Me' is another classic tune very simple and a love story. It's a persuasive story. 'Want To Love You' is more of the chase type of lyrics. Trying to convince her that you are the right one. Classic harmonies and organ with a nice almost jazzy guitar solo. It all sounds so nice. A must for any reggae lover.
Sista Argie 'Lucky Day'
Nice easy going tune with a good vibe. Sista Argie has a nice voice. The only thing we dont get in how could be Jah's 'Lucky Day."
DANCEHALL
D'Angel 'Mi Alrite'
Little dancehall tune from the former queen to the king of the dancehall, D'Angel
Bro Falkon 'Relative'
Bro Falkon talks a serious issue in Jamaica. 'Only mi relative know where me live, mi no need friend, give them everything since the beginning then them come bust out your head.' Sad and true. Be careful of who you keep as a friend
SKA
Catbite "Nice One!"
Catbite has released their second album "Nice One!" Second albums are the albums that make or break you. This band has been categorized as a ska band among other things. They definitely do many different styles and definitely have a ska side whether it be of a 2-Tone style or with a bit more rock influence. Our focus with be on the ska side of things. After listening to the album, we feel you need to hear it all instead of just picking out the better songs which you find here in this review. Below you will find the album. the first real ska tune, 'Stay,' has that rocksteady/Ska sound and so does 'Bad Influence,' which has more of that rocksteady sound especially with that sweet organ. Brittany Luna's vocals shine on both tracks. 'Stay' gets smooth even though she says contrary to what you'd want she 'won't stay.' It kinda of makes you want it even more. 'Bad Influence' turns out to be good because 'there's ain't way you can deny.' Many only know the third wave of ska which is ska with punk and 'TV Screen Beauty Queen,' Asinine Aesthetic,' 'Call Your Bluff,' and 'Not UR Baby' are all somewhere between tradition ska and the third wave sound. All are catchy tunes for sure. There’s even a reggae/ska take on Selena’s 'Bidi Bidi Bom Bom' and radical reworking that nods to Luna’s heritage. Our favorite tune on the album and sounds way better than the original. Great album.
SOCA
V'ghn 'Sweet Melanin'
Probably the sweetest tune we have heard from V'ghn and the song is also the name of the riddim it's so sweet. Riddim bad 'Sweet Melanin'
