SHOK WAVE is your weekly new REGGAE music blog. SHOK WAVE finds music that is out there in the form of Reggae, Dancehall, Soca, Ska, Dub, Reggae Rock & anything else musical with a Caribbean origin and in any language.
Here is what we found this week.......Enjoy!
Instead of not doing a blog this week we decided to list a bunch of good songs that released. I did not find anything great just good. Maybe this should be the start of an additional playlist? What do you think?
REGGAE
Queen Omega 'Nice and Clean'
The Queen has recently released a new album. This new single on the "City riddim" sounds better than anything on the album. The song says 'I'm a black woman sitting on the throne, nice and clean....' This one is ROYAL!!!!
Kenton The Poet 'Back To The Foundation'
Never heard of this artist, just really like how he incorporates all the foundation reggae artists. Kenton The Poet on the 'Kingston Dakar riddim.' It's Africa meets Jamaica.
Buzzrock 'Ilahful Way'
Reall rootsy and irie vibe on this one. Buzzrock calls it a 'Ilahful Way' to move which it is very much. Love the vibes on this one.
BERES HAMMOND & WICKERMAN 'Mi Deyah Again'
Beres returns with the appropriate 'Mi Deyah Again.' In case, you don't know Jamaican patois, it means I am here again. Beres brings a long lost dancehall Dj from 80's Wickerman. Good vibes
SKA
Death of Guitar Pop "Pukka Sounds"
In modern day two-tone ska fashion, there is no one that compares to Death of Guitar Pop. Their third release is "Pukka Sounds." This album starts off quite a bit more poppy than their original "69 Candy Street" & one step closer to the pop side with "In Over Our Heads." The band is a duo of Silky & Top Kat. When Silky takes over we get that 2 tone feel & vibe back on tracks 'Back Of A Lorry' and 'DOGP Shuffle.' This is the DOGP we like & love. The video is shot in the 'back of a Lorry,' which has a bonafide rock solo. This song features the King and it sounds like a hammond keyboards. Its a dancing ska tune, a theme song for DOGP aka Death of Guitar. The album goes lighter and still decent. It's not the heavy, heavy monster sound we might expect. Variety is nice, we just think Silky should be the lead, solo singer. So you 'wanna feed the monkeys,' this is where 'Captain Melvin's Reggae Party Bus' comes in as the 'rickety old train.'. They take it back to their roots with a cover of Rancid's 'Junkie Man,' to great hooray. On the deluxe edition there's two different takes of two of their bests songs still to this day from the first album. They are 'Suburban Ska Club (Pub Joanna version) which means it's live. The other being 'Rickety Old Train (original Home Demo).' Still the best out there in these modern days.
ROCKSTEADY CHRISTMAS
Patrice 'Rocksteady Christmas'
Great concept and the music sounds good and a nice selection of artists, singing over Christmas classics, the only tune to really stand out is 'Santa Baby' by Ala.Ni
SOCA
Adam O 'I Need'
Adam O confesses his need for his lady. Nice change of pace
Kwame 'My Business'
Kwame reminds us all, what he does is his business so 'keep out of mi business.' More positive soca.
SOCA FOR CHRISTMAS
Various Artists "Bad Parang Riddim"
4th Dimension productions brings a satirical soca Christmas with the 'Bad Parang riddim." The best tracks are what should be the title track by Flanka is 'Christmas Soca,' since thats what Parang really represents. Parang is basically soca that comes out during the holiday season. 'You get your rum...check, you get your ham....check, black cake....check, well everything dun set.' Love how Flank calls out all the goodies of the Caribbean for the season. Camille Claudette gets rude with Santa saying her 'Chimney' needs work. The 'Saxy Christmas' track is the instrumental with a sax cheering up the vibe.
Metal 'Doh Do Wrong'
A parang with a message and Metal makes it sound good. Basically, Metal is telling his country men of Grenada not to do wrong. It's based on a true story.
DANCEHALL
LePrince 'Put Away The Guns'
A song from his new album, which sounds good, 'Put Away The Guns' is the one that really caught us. He is joined by Shabba & Jay Ref. Out of France, LePrince is new to us and best of all sure sounds good.
DUTTY DANCEHALL
Silk Boss 'Rich Dat'
Anybody who knows us, knows we do not promote gun tune, slackness or anything of the sort. This song has all of it. Musically, this is a good song with it's catchy beat/riddim and the melody along with Silk Boss's flow. We have to be fair & honest because as we always say at the end of the day it's about the muzik, which is bigger than the whole ah we. Big up to OMC for the production.
Big Voice 'Lion King'
Off the same riddim as above, Big Voice comes with 'Lion King' a song about a ghetto youth who rises through their hustle. The video gives it more of a bad man feel. This is reality in Jamaica. You got to watch your head back and can't trust no one, unfortunately. ONE MCKINLEY CRESCENT RECORDS
