Greetings Music Massive
This is the slowest week for good music so unfortunately not a lot to report on.
Reggae
Jr Thomas & the Volcanoes release a great sounding cd straight out of the era between ska & reggae. The goal, with partner Brian Dixon, was to produce a record that emulated the golden era of reggae. Well I think this is about as close as you're going to get except this is mostly rocksteady to me. Using California's finest musicians in this vein it's a solid album with standouts being 'Promises' & 'Color Me Blue.' Links to these 2 songs are here right now
Demarco has become a dancehall staple. His first breakout single was called 'Fallen Soldier.' Well he returns with a similar track called 'fallen Friends.' Both more of a cross of reggae & dancehall
Soca/Calypso
Bunji Garlin & wife Fay-Ann Lyons release a new hybrid soca riddim called 'Heart & Soul' from their First Klase productiions. I love the track and Bunjis song 'Boom Bam.' It just has a good groove and simple lyrics about going to stage show. Then Fay's 'Boss Chicks' is "For The Girls Who Run The World" because they do.
The Last Bardjohn of Calypso aka Kurt Allen is the only one on a larger scale trying to keep Calypso alive in my opinion. I know there are others. He's the only one promoting it to a level and taking charge with good calypso and getting his music out there. His latest is 'Pot Of Gold (Rainbow).' A true calypso musically & topically with a strong melody of creating global awareness.
Out of Dominica for Mas Domnik again this week it's more Calypso which is unfortunately a dying breed. This Week it's Sye with 'Feel Up' and a nice melody. He does go a bit off.
