Travis Beckmann
Travis Beckmann was born in California on the Unites States Marine Corps Base of Camp Pendleton on March 9, 1988. In 1991, Travis moved with his Mom to Oahu, Hawaii and began a decade of learning about the sport of surfing. At the age of four Travis was introduced to the sport of surfing by local lifeguards at Fort DeRussey Beach in Waikiki. At five years of age, Travis moved to the North Shore and it is there that he began to develop his intense love and passion for surfing. For 10 years Travis surfed every day in Hawaii, at some of the best training grounds in the world for a young grom. In 1995 he officially joined the amateur surfing world and began competing in premiere amateur contest venues with his friends all over Hawaii including NSSA and HASA. Travis competed with arguably the best youth surfers in the world, maintaining a top 5 rating among the hottest rated groms in the islands. In March 2001, at the age of 13, Travis captured the title of Open Boys Champion at the NSSA Hawaii Regional Championships at Turtle Bay. Shortly after this victory, Travis moved with his Mom and sister Taylor to the legendary beaches of Montauk, NY at the tip of the east end of Long Island.
Despite the devastating blow of losing daily access to the best waves in the world, Travis continued his relentless pursuit of his surfing goals. Using his loss of Hawaii as a motivator Travis became even more intensely focused and developed a stronger passion for the sport, traveling up and down the East Coast surfing every contest he could find. His first appearance at the 2003 NSSA Eastern Championships at Sebastian Inlet earned Travis his second NSSA Regional Title in the Explorer Boys division. Drawn to the area primarily because of Sebastian Inlet, Travis and his Mom and sister relocated to Vero Beach in November of 2004, That December, Travis represented his new Indian River County home and the USA at the 2004 Quiksilver ISA World Games at Papeetee, Tahiti. The USA team returned home with the Silver Team Medal – the first USA medal in ten year and still remains. From 2005-2008 Travis continued surfing through the amateur ranks of the NSSA, ESA and the ASP North America Pro Junior Series. 2009 marked a forth place finish ratings result (a consistent 4th for the second year in a row) in the ASP North America Junior Ratings and Travis qualified for a spot at the prestigious Billabong World Junior Surfing Championships January 3-10th 2009. 2009 also marked the first year on the WQS where Travis earned his best result of the year in Newquay, England finishing 17th. Travis was the last USA surfer standing in the competition. Having received two ASP wildcards this 2009 season, Travis finished the 2009 season rated #205 for the year. Travis is currently embarking on his second year as a professional on the ASP World Qualifying Series. Typically it takes several years on this tour to gain a top 32 rating and qualify to move onto the ASP World Championship Tour, also known as the Dream Tour. 2010 is the year Travis will be focused on the goal of reaching the top 100.
Travis is a remarkable example of determination, focus and perseverance. He pushes himself daily, making every effort to improve and perfect his craft in his personal quest toward achieving the ultimate goal of becoming a World Champion. Taking Aloha with him everywhere he travels, Travis embraces the experiences of meeting new people and learning about their culture.
Through surfing he is able to experience life in a truly unique fashion. Travis understands the hard work it takes to achieve success and he is committed to that work. Giving back to the sport is also important to Travis, He takes the time to surf with little kids wherever he travels and he is involved in helping his Mom with the NSSA Southeast Conference. Travis recently joined forces with the nonprofit Caribbean Conservation Corporation as an International Sea Turtle Ambassador. Please visit www.cccturtle.org for more information. Together Travis and the CCC are launching a 2010 PR campaign that will include a PSA and online tracking of Travis and his travels worldwide. “Turtle Surfari with Beckmann” is a web based travel adventure series that will chronicle Travis and his quest to learn more about sea turtles and the different challenges they face around the world.
